Living Room Decor Tip #2 - Height of Couch Cushions

Writer's picture: Sheri GarisekSheri Garisek

When choosing a couch it's always a good idea to sit in it and get a good feel for it. One thing to keep in mind is this rule of thumb: Choose couches and chairs where you can touch the ground when sitting upright. It sounds like an obvious rule of thumb, I know. You may be scratching your head and asking, "When have I ever sat on a couch and my feet haven't touched the ground?" That's kind of a silly thing to bring up.

And you're right, for most of us who are an average height, it's generally never a problem. However, for some people it is. If you and your family are on the shorter side, you may want to choose a couch that sits closer to the ground. We all want to feel comfortable in our own homes and sitting on furniture that is easy for us to get in and out of is one thing that can make all the difference.

Now, for those of us who are on the taller side, as the man pictured above, you may want to invest in furniture that has a higher couch cushion height. When I first saw this photo I had to crack up a bit. His legs look like his knees are sticking up, and his shoulders are higher than the back of the couch, making him look like he's oversized for the couch. You can't change the lengths of your limbs, but you can change the height of your furniture.

When looking for furniture that fits you and your family, you're mostly not going to have a problem with this rule of thumb: Choose couches and chairs where you can touch the ground when sitting upright. It's best if your thighs sit horizontally on the couch cushions and not poking upward, nor your toes dangling off the edge of the couch. For people who are shorter or taller, it may take longer to find furniture that is most comfortable for you, but I assure you once you do, you'll be happy you took the time.
