Choosing a Quality Pillow Insert that Will Stand the Test of Time

Updated: Jul 18

Are you one of those people who loves to change out your seasonal and holiday decorations by changing out your decorative pillows?

Do you love high-quality products you can use over and over without worrying that they might not last another year?

On the decorative pillow topic, we go for both of the above!

An easy way to keep your house updated for the seasons and holidays is to change out your decorative pillows. It can instantly add that festive Christmas touch, make your home feel cozy in the winter, or brighten things up for the spring or summer.

(See the end of this article for links to the pillow covers shown.)

Saving Space and Money

One of the best ways to go about this is to buy pillow covers for the seasons and holidays and use the same pillow inserts all year long.

This saves space as you can simply fold up the pillow covers for the off seasons rather than having to store full and puffy pillows for each season.

Using the same pillow inserts all year can save money, and if you have concerns about the environment, can save our natural resources by needing less of them. Rather than buying pillow inserts for all your pillow covers for the year, you can invest in really good quality pillow inserts that will stand the test of time.

Polyfill Pillow Inserts

You can buy regular 100% polyester polyfill stuffed pillow inserts here on our site. This polyfill stuffing is what we've all come to expect for the insides of our pillows.

These inserts have a white 100% polyester or 100% cotton outer shell and are made using the blown and sewn technique. This is a manufacturing process by which the stuffing is blown into the outer shell and then it's sewn closed.

The outer cover seam on these pillow covers is an overlock seam on the outside of the pillow insert.

The feel of these pillow inserts is of a standard softness and they offer a reasonable amount of polyester fill.

They are generally less expensive than a more high-quality pillow insert, are good for indoor pillow use, and do a good job of making your decorative pillow covers full and fluffy.

Our High-Quality Pillow Inserts

We'd like to introduce you to our premium Water and Mold Resistant Down Alternative Pillow Inserts.

These pillow inserts feature a fabric that is specifically designed to be waterproof and mimic the feel of genuine down. This is achieved by using an advanced polyester cloth and filling it by the blown and sewn technique with 100% down alternative polyester fiber that possess an imitation down effect.

The result is a pillow insert that feels luxuriously soft, retains its shape well, and can be molded into the perfect 'karate chop' effect that is highly sought after in decorative pillows. This type of insert is ideal for those who want the plush comfort of down without the allergens associated with natural down.

The pillow insert edges are sewn with an "edge sewn" technique. This is a process where the pillow edges are sewn together and then turned inside out so the raw edges on the inside, but then an extra step is taken. The edges are edge sewn, meaning they are sewn on the outside approximately 1/8" away from the seam. This technique offers a high-quality, professionally finished, crisp edge all around, and resembles the look of a pillow with a piped edge trim.

The water and mold resistant 100% polyester outer fabric keeps the high-quality down alternative inner fiberfill from becoming saturated in wet weather, making them perfect for outdoor use. Coupled with our premium water and mold resistant pillow covers, you'll have double the protection!

Choosing a Pillow Insert

Most people assume if you have, for example, an 18" x 18" pillow cover, you should choose an 18" x 18" pillow insert.

We recommend choosing a pillow insert 1" or 2" larger than your pillow cover to correctly fill your pillow covers from corner to corner and ensure a smooth and even appearance.  This will provide a very attractive firm and fluffy look to your pillow.

The following are our recommendations:

  • For a 12" x 20" lumbar pillow cover use a 13" x 21" pillow insert

  • For an 18" x 18" pillow cover use a 20" x 20" pillow insert

  • For a 20" x 20" pillow cover use a 22" x 22" pillow insert

The list could go on with different pillow cover and insert sizes, but you get the idea.

We hope we've been able to educate you about how pillow inserts are made, provide you with a good overview of the difference between polyfill pillow inserts and our high-quality down alternative pillow inserts, as well as how to choose the correct pillow insert size. The only thing left to do now is to go shop for pillows!
